Travel Cambodia Phnom Penh

What should I do in Cambodia?

I’m travelling to Cambodia for 5 nights in February. We fly into Phnom Penh at mignight on Sunday.

I’m really keen to make it fun – lots of drinking, chilling out by the beach, etc. However, I’m also keen to see the extraordinary sights Camodia has to offer, as I’ve never been anywhere remotely like SE Asia!

I’m thinking of staying in phnom penh for two nights, then heading down to Sihanoukville for 2 nights.

Anything else I really should be doing? Anything I can do en route?

Thanks in advance!

PS – I’m a 29 year old guy travelling with 3 others

Well, if you have just 5 days and if you’re not into archeological stuff ( Angkor Wat) or into history of commie dictatorships ( Toul Sleng and the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh), head straight away to Sihanoukville. Fun, drinks, lot of girls and young backpackers, dirt cheap seafood, breeze, beaches and tropical islands, all in one place !

Phnom Penh is a dangerous place these days, as the Chinese New Year is very near ( celebrations will start next week and last 5 days) and the locals needs money to make presents to their families and friends back to their villages.
People get robbed ( and even shot) on daily basis.
Besides, there’s absolutely nothing to do there for a young tourist ( except bar-hopping, smoking dope and/or snorting smack) and it is a crowded, busy, dusty and quite awful town, the Royal Palace is a smaller imitation of its Bangkok homologue and the famed riverside is just a trafficked place full of beggars and trinket sellers.

Sihanoukville is much more safer, cleaner and has plenty to see : it is surrounded by 3 national parks, by a dozen of deserted islands, there are a lot of jungle areas and mangrove swamps, there’s plenty of rice paddies around town, it offers nice diving and snorkeling spots, a lot of beaches, nice temples and the atmosphere is the typical rural Cambodia’s one.

Enjoy wonderful Cambodia !
