In the 13th century, the king converted to Buddhism and the country followed suit – Angkor Wat has become the main Buddhist temple. So important is Angkor Wat in Cambodia it appears in the flag of the country and is a potent symbol of national pride to the people Cambodia. Tourism to Angkor Wat has helped to provide funding for site protection.
