In the 1920s, the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, located on the banks of the Mekong, was known as the "Pearl of Asia" and today retains much of its elegance with its red and French architecture. The town takes its name from Wat Phnom or Hill Temple which was built in 1373 and is the oldest structure in Phnom Penh.
The Royal Palace with its Silver Pagoda dates to the mid-1800s and is an excellent example of the architecture Khmer is also the National Museum. The French also left behind their houses, boulevards and churches etc. An important example is the market Art Deco, Phsar Thom Thmei.

The horror of the recent past is commemorated in the museum Tuol Sleng, the school was used as a concentration camp. Today it is a memorial to the unknown numbers who have died during the Pol Pot regime.
Most Visitors to Cambodia pass through the town of Siem Reap, without even a second look, but it was once the most glamorous city in South Asia and destination of the rich and famous. The name, Siem Reap in Cambodia is a testament the sometimes difficult relations with its neighbors – it means "Siam defeated" in Thailand today!
With its boulevards lined trees and old French buildings by the river, it is now Cambodia's fastest growing city. In fact, Siem Reap is a string of villages along the river, each centered on a Buddhist pagoda or Wat. The town is centered on the Old Town Market where visitors can find the old colonial buildings and the main shopping district. It is an ideal city to explore the surrounding countryside and fishing villages.
But Siem Reap main claim to fame and prosperity is that it acts as a gateway to world-class 820,000 square meters, Angkor Wat temple complex. Built by the Khmer king II, Suryavarman in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat was originally the palace of king and a temple dedicated to the Hindi god Vishnu. In the 13th century, the king converted to Buddhism and the country followed suit – Angkor Wat has become the main Buddhist temple. So important is Angkor Wat in Cambodia it appears in the flag of the country and is a potent symbol of national pride to the people Cambodia. Tourism to Angkor Wat has helped to provide funding for site protection.
